1978 Volkswagen Westfalia

Nostalgic Icon of Surfers and Hippies

In the US, the VW bus became popular in the 1960s. It had many nicknames including: minibus, hippie-mobile, hippie bus, hippie van, Microbus, or Transporter. It was replaced by the Vanagon, of which only the Westfalia camper version has a nickname, “Westy”.

It did not take long for surfers and hippies in the 60s and 70s to enjoy the independence and freedom of being on the road, whether it was in search of that perfect wave, or to go to “Dead” concerts. Many turned them into their little homes and toured our beautiful country. Part of the genius of the Volkswagen Microbus was the ease of a camper conversion and the front end configuration. By mounting the engine in the rear and flattening the front, VW gave drivers an unparalleled view of the road.

Today you can rent this beauty! Decorate it with surfboards or flowers for your next catalog photoshoot or have it as a prop for your next special event. It is just waiting for a starring role in a period movie!
